This month’s comfortable in your own podcast features Lauren Bacon and Emira Mears, authors of The Boss of You: Everything a Woman Needs to Know to Start, Run, and Maintain Her Own Business and owners of Raised Eyebrow Web Studio. It was my great pleasure to have a chance to meet and talk with Lauren and Emira. A few months ago I got the chance to read their book and write an article about it. I was really drawn to their approach and advice they offer in the book.
Let’s face it – while there are more business books out there than you can shake a stick at (and where exactly did that cliche come from??) very few are written by women for women. This is the book both Lauren and Emira say they wish they had when they went out on their own in February 2000 to start Raised Eyebrow Web Studio. Like so many women they did not sit around at night thinking “hey I really want to be a business owner”. Instead what they discovered was that they wanted a career that fit more of who they were as individuals and creative professionals. They wanted the opportunity to do work they loved, have a positive impact on others, and make a living that supports their lives while also having time to have a personal life. For me personally, I can definitely relate. I never had any desire to start a business just to be a business owner. I wanted my professional pursuits to better fit who I was and how I wanted to live my life. And, when I discovered that self-employment could be a route to what I desired, I sought to learn more.
Their book is really applicable to women at any stage of their business. Whether you are just thinking about it or ready to expand, there is value to be had from their book. We all need many of the reminders they put forth. Not to mention, everyone can benefit from hearing the stories of the professional women they profile throughout the book.
Without further ado, I invite you to sit back, relax, or even sweat off a few pounds if you like listening to podcasts while walking like I do…and listen to my chat with Lauren and Emira.
